

In October 2019, we asked 100 parents what was most challenging about helping their kids learn to read. In this post, we're excited to introduce you to Duolingo ABC, a literacy app for kids ages 3 and over! Why did we create a literacy app? That's why we created a new app to teach learners around the world how to read. At Duolingo, we're committed to supporting free, high-quality education for all kinds of learners, and we know how important literacy is to learning throughout your life.

Research has shown that students with low reading levels are more likely to get poor grades, display behavioral problems, repeat school years, or even drop out of school entirely.īut not all kids have access to high-quality literacy instruction that’s based on current research. Developers of the app have indicated that the study done by the Research by Education Development Center shows that kids who used Duolingo ABC for 9 weeks improved their literacy scores by 28%.Reading is an essential skill that impacts all other educational outcomes. The curriculum used on the app is based on the recommendations of the National Reading Panel. The app has been developed with support from learning scientists, engineers, literacy specialists, illustrators, and parents. With the app, expect kids to learn spelling, use of tricky words, and build their vocabulary. There are over 700 lessons in all, so there’s plenty of content to help kids gain familiarity with the language. This is done using gameplay with adorable character driven stories that keeps the kids engaged for hours. Duolingo ABC helps kids learn letter sounds and word recognition in nice bite size lessons.
